“THE STATE OF THE ART OF TEXTILE RECYCLING IN PORTUGAL”

Jomafil has been recycling textiles for more than half a century. From yarn to felt, they carry out the complete waste processing cycle. In 2023, the Covilhã company recorded a turnover of three million euros, with mattresses accounting for the largest share, 60 per cent of that turnover.

The remaining 40% is divided equally between sales of fibres and to the automotive industry, where BMW, Renault, Ford and Ligier are amongst the clients.

Nuno Madeira emphasises that “the state of the art in textile recycling has existed in Portugal for decades”. The CEO has based his leadership on a “strategic vision and commitment to sustainability, adapting to the challenges of the 21st century, ensuring that the company not only survives, but thrives”, reads the company’s most recent publication.

An example of this investment was the inauguration at the beginning of 2024 of a new production line to select non-textile parts such as zips, buttons and other applications. Jomafil is currently present in 10 countries.

“We sort and crumble pre- and post-consumer waste generated in the textile, clothing and mattress industries. From the selected and processed waste we produce blankets that originate felts of different compositions, weights and functionalities,” they explain on their website.
