EURATEX sent a letter this week to the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, asking for immediate action to support the European Union’s textile industry. Mário Jorge Machado, president of the Confederation, emphasised the ‘need for rapid measures to maintain the sector’s competitiveness in the face of global competition’.
Among the points covered in the document are: the removal of the minimum exemption under the Union’s Customs Code, a reaction to high energy costs and market fragmentation, as well as measures to boost demand for sustainable textiles.
Representing over 200,000 companies, EURATEX called for changes in green public procurement to reduce dependence on non-EU suppliers, closer trade relations with the United States and a modernisation of the EU-Turkey Customs Union.
