CAIMA INVESTS 40 MILLION TO REACH CARBON NEUTRALITY

Caima, a producer of cellulosic fibres for the textile industry, is investing 40 million euros in the construction of a biomass boiler, which will allow the company to abandon fossil fuels throughout its production process. This investment is the final step of the Caima Go Green project, which should be completed by the end of 2024.

In a statement, the biorefinery states that the goal of this investment is to “guarantee total energy autonomy exclusively from renewable sources, thus becoming the first Iberian company in its sector to reach this historic milestone”.

The 40 million euros investment required for this new plant will not only allow Caima to be the first cellulosic fibre factory in the Iberian Peninsula – and one of the first in Europe – to operate without the use of fossil fuels, but will also reinforce the company’s production of cellulosic fibres, and allow for new innovative projects.

Together with CeNTI and CITEVE, the company is also developing the “Fiber4Fiber” project, which aims to investigate and define the best operational set-up, thus adapting Caima’s soluble pulp to produce viscose and lyocell fibres with the maximum quality standard.

Another goal is to create chemical markers that allow the company’s customers to attest the origin and sustainability of their soluble pulp based products, and to create functionalities in cellulosic fibres that currently only exist in synthetic ones.
