German company Lohmann & Rauscher (L&R), a global reference in medical products and services, acquired 49% of the Portuguese group ADA in July. Based in Seroa, ADA manufactures gauze and nonwoven products, bandages, incontinence articles and disposable medical items.
Currently the only truly competitive European manufacturer in this segment, ADA drew the attention of L&R, which aims to strengthen its presence in the European market and secure greater supply capacity.
“With its advanced production technology and know-how, profitable business management and gauze and nonwoven products made in Europe, ADA is an indispensable partner. Thanks to our partnership, we can further explore the Portuguese and Spanish markets. In addition, this cooperation strengthens our position in the European market,” said Holger Maegdefrau, CFO of L&R, in a statement.
With over 170 years of experience, L&R develops and supplies medical devices and hygiene products ranging from conventional bandages to modern treatment and care systems. The group employs more than 5,700 people, operates over 50 subsidiaries and works with a network of 140 distribution partners, reaching more than 120 countries worldwide.
For ADA’s CEO Marta Andrade, who has led the group since 2023 alongside her sisters Sara and Matilde Andrade – granddaughters of founder Albino Dias de Andrade – the synergies of this partnership are clear and will further strengthen the group’s competitiveness. “We are very excited about this collaboration and look forward to working together,” she emphasized.
ADA, which has become increasingly vertically integrated over the years, currently employs 420 people and recorded sales of €48 million in 2024.
