Textile and clothing exports grew 3.7% in May

Portuguese textile and clothing exports have grown 3.7% in May, the best monthly result since the beginning of 2019. The overall results of the first five months of the year recorded a total exported value of 2,270 million euro, which represents a 1% increase compared to the same period in 2018.

Exports of textile and clothing to destinations outside the European Union have grown 11% in the first five months of the year. Standing out, among these, are the sales to the USA (a 17% growth, i.e., 20 million euro), Canada, which rises 26.4% or 4.8 million euro, and India, with an increase in sales by 4.2 million representing a rise of 124.4%.

Despite the atmosphere of recession that has been felt in sales to the EU (a 1% drop in the homologous period), Italy and the Netherlands have gone against the grain, maintaining a steady and significant contribution to the exports of the national TCI (5.8% and 6.7%, respectively).

“Italy was the country of the Union where we recorded a bigger absolute growth in the exported value (8 million euro more, corresponding to a variation of +5.8%), followed by the Netherlands (a rise of 6 million euro, or +6.7%)”, enumerates Paulo Melo, president of ATP.

Keeping the trend that has been noticed lately, “Spain was the importer with the biggest drop (around 22 million euro, -3.1%), followed by Germany (5 million euro, -2.5%)”, details the president of ATP.
